The 1983 Proof Set saw the number of coins decline to five and the face value fall to only 91 cents. This was due to the removal of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, which was no longer minted.
Despite the reduced number of coins the US Mint issue price remained at $11.00*. The US Mint still sold a relatively large number of sets.
The 1983 Proof coins are typically found with strong deep cameo devices. Notably, the Lincoln Cents contained in the Proof Sets were struck in the bronze composition. For circulating coins, the US Mint had switched to a zinc based composition during the course of the year.
